Ok, this is basic, compared to what you guys are discussing, but ...
I have set up a basic perc. staff, defining the snare drum (#59) as
the pitch for playback. Later in the score, I want the sound, on the
same clef, to become Side Drum (#56). What process, exactly, makes
this happen? I am entering data via my Rolland Synth, with speedy
entry, playing the corresponding numbered pitches.

I actually think I have an easy solution to your dilemma, Darcy --
simply go edit the percussion map, redefining the playback pitch
for the note(s) in question.
That would leave the displayed notes at the same locations on the
staves, eliminating the need for two sets of percussion staves or
two different files, and the only hardship would be to ensure you
have the correctly-edited percussion map at the point of
initiating playback.
