Is there any reason why Finale lags behind it's competitors in having a user friendly figured bass utility?
Is it the lack of use for such a feature?

Can you describe the competitor's friendly figured bass utility?

I'm no expert, but the Other Program has a dedicated font for figured bass built in, and has a nice set of keyboard shortcuts included to do all the various niceties of figures, including parentheses and brackets, accidentals before and afterwards, slashes through all the digits, continuation lines to show that the chord continues to apply, and so on. It's certainly the most comprehensive figured bass font I've seen, though I admit that it's been a few years since I was called upon to read any figured bass in anger!

Best,
