Writing music you detest to put bread on your table is selling out (think of those horrid German Dances and countless Minuets which Beethoven and Mozart wrote to put bread on their table) but writing music which you believe in but is tailored to someone's specific needs so they buy it is quite different.

Yes, but it's still not likely to garner much respect. As a modern parallel, I know quite a few authors that make their living writing "Tie-in" books in order to support their families and their writing habits, and to give them the practice and connections to allow them to write their own stuff. But they get *no* respect, een when the tie-ins are well written, well considered, and supported by the creators of the source work, even if a bit (or sometimes more than a bit) constrained by the needs of the market and/or copyright owners.

So the next time you see a "Star Trek" or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "Star Wars" novel on the shelf, think about those "horrid German Dances and countless Minuets".

The rent must be paid.
