cardew was very aware of what he was doing and why it was necessary at that point for him, as well as being VERY aware of the implications of such a score in the particular era and scene he was involved in (and defining). look up AMM (issue 11 LMJ has some decent stuff), scratch orchestra, cardew's article "stockhausen serves imperialism" etc.

there is also a book/score by him about interpreting treatise, can't remember the name offhand... something like the treatise handbook.
