No, you're right. I'd also forgotten the $129 price tag for OS X 10.4.x, which -- obviously -- comes pre-installed on any new Mac. That means it's almost certainly *more* money to make the beige G3 usable under 10.4 (new hard drive, new graphics card, max out memory, install USB 2.0/FireWire PCI card) -- and that's not even including the cost of the processor upgrade.

So, on further consideration, Johannes's first response was right on the money. Lawrence really ought to try to return the processor upgrade for a refund. Or, if that's not possible, then sell the machine on eBay with the processor upgrade pre-installed and use the money towards the purchase of a Mac mini. Otherwise, as Johannes says, you're only throwing good money after bad.

Cheers,

- Darcy

You're right, the price difference isn't that much, but you also have to factor in the cost of upgrading all your software to Universal versions (unless you want to run everything in emulation). And Lawrence has already paid for the processor upgrade, so now that he's already gone down that road, he might as well upgrade the other components while he's at it.

Well, yes, but he will have to do that eventually, anyway.
