The Giuffre trio records with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow are classic. Originally recorded for Verve, the first two were reissued by ECM as "Jimmy Giuffre 3 1961". The other one is called "Free Fall," on Columbia. Perhaps it was one of those you are thinking of? (There are several duo tracks, where Swallow lays out and it's just Paul and Jimmy.)

Jimmy Guiffre wasn't a stellar clarinetist, either, but my jaw dropped when I heard a duo album he recorded with Paul Bley (the title escapes me now).
