InDesign is a great program, but it's also expensive -- $700 -- and often overkill for people who don't have extensive needs.
I use InDesign and have used Quark XPress in the past, but I also keep around a copy of MS Publisher. Publisher is emphatically *not* a great program, but it's relatively easy to use, and it does fine with relatively simple layout jobs. It costs $150, or $90 to upgrade. I believe you can get the upgrade price if you own any previous version of Office, whether or not that Office package includes Publisher. Go to Staples or CompUSA or wherever and check the box to make sure.
