For the record: I have learned that Word 2008 fixes the longstanding
problem with EPS on-screen. It also fixes the problem I was having
with generating a PDF from a Word document that includes EPS graphics.

This is a Mac thing -- or, specifically, a Word for Mac thing --
reminds me why I never use Word. I'm glad it works on the PC side
but unfortunately that doesn't help me.
Printing using the Acrobat driver yields the same problem. I
misspoke early about Distiller -- it turns out Distiller won't
convert the file at all! It generates some useless, incomprehensible
error message. Reminds me why I never use Distiller.
