Ummm... the guys in my band could. Well, probably, depending on
pitch. They'd more likely use a slide vibrato of some sort to get
an approximate effect. But marking it as a shake would give them a
good idea of what sound was desired.

Yes, but a turn/grupetto would get the same effect from most
players.
