I have used executable shapes, especially when Human Playback fails to give the result I want. Now that relatively useful playback can be generated, I routinely make sound files so that I can send them along with scores to prospective performers ensembles, and conductors. They find them useful, even if the sounds are less than wonderful (especially choral sounds), and they understand that what they hear is a less-than-perfect mock-up.
