I'm talking about a willing ignorance. Karkoschka's book came out 40 years ago, and it was encyclopedic -- a summing up of what was already in use. Any performing musician who does not know its contents has a deliberate, selective, chosen hole in performance knowledge. To me, that's unprofessional behavior. Not understanding and chosing not to understand are different mechanisms.
