Hi Don,

I'm afraid I'm not seeing an enormous usability different between what you 
suggest and the current behavior. 

To use your hypothetical: press Esc, drag offending hairpin, then double-click 
a chord symbol or lyric and you're also back in the previous tool where you 
left off 2 seconds ago.
