Not sure if this is what either of you have experienced, but I've had something similar happen when I've started, but not finished, entering numeric values in the playback window, either a tempo or a measure number (maybe each). If the cursor is still active in that particular field, any speedy actions attempted using number keys simply add digits to the field where the cursor is active. There've been times when this was hard to spot and it had me baffled for a while.
