The dialogue box is not a drop down menu. If you have already entered Slash Notation, there should be a blue line over the staff when you have the Staff Tool selected. Right-click the blue line and hold, and choose Edit Staff Style from the drop down menu. NOW the dialogue box opens. One of the items with a check mark in it is Alternate Notation. Click that to open another window, where you will see a list of items to appear. You want Items In Other Layers all to have check marks next to them.
