I think I have mostly figured this out. You don't apply the slash style. Instead you put the punches into layer 2, then select the staff tool. Double click the measure and select alternate notation. In the alternate notation, you select slash notation applied to layer 1, then under "all other layers" check the "Notes" box.
That seems to work, but maybe somebody has a more straightforward approach.
