Thanks for the advice, Klaus and Raymond, but no luck so far.

The file was based on an ensemble template (not a pre-existing work, 
overwritten) so I have created a new ensemble template, copied across 
the music from the old file.  This didn't fix the problem, so I copied 
the music up to a point just before the problem started and entered the 
problem passage again, but the volume still drops away. As I copied the 
music, I used the "edit filter" options to get rid of the MIDI data (and 
tried various other settings) but none of these have had any effect on 
the end result.

Any other ideas?
