Depending on how complex the notation is, later versions of Finale are SUPPOSED 
to import older files perfectly, but in reality there are some things that need 
adjusting. If all you are doing is creating scores of single-note instruments 
and lyrics, chances are good that everything will open just fine. I run into 
issues with piano parts, spacing of certain items, and when I need to edit 
things like expressions.

Someone once suggested a path to opening very old files with the assertion that 
certain later versions imported certain older versions with fewer errors, but I 
can't find it. Something like "open first in 2002 and save it, then open THAT 
file in 2012" or something like that.
