I address both of those issues with plugins. Copying slur shapes is trivial
with my Mass Copy plugin (both in score and parts). As for spacing, I
almost never manually modify spacing any more now that I have the Note
Spacing plugin (part of my plugin suite as well). Probably the number one
reason Note Spacing is so much better is that it has an option for
adjusting the spacing between ledger lines. It also has an option for
adjusting spacing after upstem flags. Even if you don't add any regions to
the list in Note Spacing, just the ledger line and upstem flags options are
worth the effort of using it.

And as long as I'm touting my plugins, another new one I'm so happy with
(for using myself) is Multimeasure Rests. It automatically adds space for
clefs, among many other addons to the built-in multimeasure rest options.
