I -Knew- it had to be something simple. I feel like such'a idiot. Ethereal will not launch from terminal, but it Will from the xwindows xterm window. Duh!!
One question, how do I quite (kill) windows within X11? I launch xdarwin and get a login window and about three xterm windows.
