I had a working installation of system-Xfree86 with WindowMaker as my window
manager until I tried following the instructions for installing KDE.

At first I got the message that xfree86-base couldn't be installed because
of an existing installation in /usr/X11R6 and in /etc/X11.

Should I have done something to remove that existing installation other than
sudo rm -rf /usr/X11R6 and sudo rm -rf /etc/X11?

If so, what?

Anyway, after doing that, I was able to complete the rest of the steps. I
couldn't find a kde.log in /tmp after replacing the start line in .xinitrc
as instructed.

I see a message like xinit: server error in the console with a suggestion to
use the -- option, then the line

XDarwin[26960] X client process terminated with status 1.

Thanks for any help.
