I added these lines to ~/.xinitrc file before I called the window manager:
xfontpath install /sw/lib/X11/fonts/applettf/
xfontpath enable
and it picked up some more fonts. If I can figure out where all the fonts live I may be able to get them. Is anyone keeping a "how to set some of this stuff up" file for Fink?

I am using blackbox-rootless. GIMP can't find any. After upgrading I
accidently installed blackbox (the regular version) and GIMP found
some, but since the menu wouldn't work in blackbox (the regular
version) I reinstalled blackbox-rootless and I'm back to GIMP not
finding any.
Any help would be apreciated.
