Welcome to Fink and X Window System.
I'm gonna be the third to make a positive report on the stability of the Fink/X environment.

Damn good
q. does it crash?
Never on the recent versions since 4.2.1, but had several on 4.2.0
Absolutely yes, at least in my case, but this really depends on the configuration.q. is it stable?
None so far. but some minor problems are being reported related to Dev Toolsq. are there problems with 10.2.3 Mac
A goldend rule: the more tools you have, and the less stable they are, the less stable the overall system is.
would like to hear either way. looking to get into X11 apps
but, not looking to crash my machine or hard code something, to get it to work.
A corollary: if you try to be minimalist, the system is usually very stable and pleasant to work in.
Practical advice: to avoid mishaps, you'd better install X Window via Fink, though you can install it manually with a GUI installer from XonX project.
Have fun
Cheers,
