I'm new to MAC also.. Welcome to the club.. But I'm NOT new to Windows ( having to run that horrendous thing they call
an OS for years ).. I've been running Linux for some time and ran OS/2 for years..

I'm NOT an expert BUT,........

It's not Windows, you don't NEED to format and reinstall. Just do some research.
The cool thing about Linux and BSD are all configs are not some mystical registery
program.

ALL LINUX and BSD configs are simply TEXT files..

The thing about Linux or Unix, the answer is not inherently obvious and might
not be able to find, but some reading, some research can usually do wonders..

I *hope* this helps.. I know it's vague.. But I'm still learnin!

OS X with fink is so cool.. OS X is cool on it's own.. Never going back..

You could be right in that my Fink might be totally messed up. Being new to
the Mac, coming from Windows, my first instinct would be to "format and
reinstall" as you so often have to do in Windows. What can I do to get
everything to a workable state?
Thanks

I have taken a somewhat different approach. I noticed that when I tried to
install another app. There were similar scrollkeeper errors. So I removed
scrollkeeper and rebuilt and reinstalled it. Then the install worked so I
went to try gnome-games again. This time I am trying the unstable version
2.0.6-2. It asked for some dependencies and I tried to set them so it would
know that I have X11 >= 4.3. When I did this I got this error:

You don't have Xft2 installed. This usually means you have XFree86 (<< 4.2) installed. pango1-xft2(-shlibs|-dev) cannot be built without Xft2. You should use pango1 package instead.

Looks for me like you haven't got either Apple's X11 1.0 which is based on Xfree86.org's 4.3.0 or the original Xfree86 4.3.0 installed or that you have a wrong system-xfree86 installed. Last week or so there were new version of system-xfree86 out which replaced the old ones and splitted of in version for system-xfree86 4.3 for manually installed Xfree86.org 4.3.0 or Apple's X11 1.0 and system-xfree86 4.2.x for manally installed Xfree.org 4.2.x and Apple's X11 up to beta3.

To be absolut sure what you have and what you haven't type the
following commands in terminal and send the output to the list or
have a look at it yourself and take the right conclusion if you are
not sure there will be help on this list.

The first command should be "startx" during start up the version of
xfree is shown. Alternativly you can go to XDarwins or Apple's X11
Info box.

When X is started up or again in the terminal type the following
fink list -i system-xfree86 and see what you get as output. On my
machine it says "i system-xfree86- 4.3-1 Placeholder:
XFree86 4.3.x and Apple X11 1.0" which means, I have a manually
installed Xfree86 4.3.0 and version 4.3-1 of the system-xfree86 and
this combination runs as smooth as it could

If you get an error message saying no system-xfree installed then
you propaply have X installed via Fink. In this case try "fink list
-i xfree86" and see what output you get. Here either you can have
Version 4.2.x or 4.3.0 installed.

Now that you know which X you have you can determine which xft and
which pango-xft you need in order to get your fink woking properly.

In case you have a 4.2.x version of X you need all the pango1-xft1
packages. All of them should be avaible as binaries via "apt-get
install pango1-xft1" Fink should be able to determine the
depencies itsself.

In case you have a 4.3.x version of X you need the pango1-xft2
packages. As above they should be avaible as binaries via fink
commander, dselect or apt-get.

To determine which xft is installed type fink list -i xft and see
if the output for xft matches the xfree86 version.

I have the slightly feeling that your fink or probably parts of it
are totaly messed up.

What you also can try to do is to "fink install pango1-xft2" and
afterwards go on with the other installation processes. In some
cases I too had to manualy install programs cause fink was unable
to fullfill the depencies the way it should have done it. So
sometimes there is some need for handwork :-)

Hope this helps

I tried to get information on Xft2 but it didn't have anything. What is it?

Sorry don't know what xft is but someone explained it to me too but I cannot remember about it.
