Sorry, seems it solved when I installed from the XCode CD. But a
clarification would be welcome, this wasn't identical to the SDK
downloadable from apple web? Also, how to rip out/properly handle apple
packages would be interesting to know, in order to perhaps be able to
handle future conflicts like this.

Who told you to download the SDK? If it's on the FAQ or documentation, let me know so I can fix it.

Otherwise, check the FAQ first. I put in the intructions to install the
X11 SDK off of the Xcode disk several days BEFORE the Panther release
because this was, and still is, such a frequently asked question.

As I said, of course I checked the FAQ and archives first. The archives mentioned some url like apple.com/download/x11 for SDK, where I indeed found it. Also, I could swear on that 6.4 in the FAQ didn't look that way yesterday? :-)

Mainly I was confused, I didn't knew there was a difference between the SDK on apple web and XCode, I actually didn't knew of XCode, *ahem* friend must have forgotten to provide that as I bought his iBook recently. Indeed, I am a beginner. The present text in the FAQ isn't that bad, but something to clear away the confusion about which SDK to use/why fink thinks I don't have any while I still am unable to install one (when trying with apple web SDK of course) would perhaps be helpful.
