Do I first remove the files Alex mentioned? X11.app (from Utilities) /usr/X11R6 /etc/X11
Can I just reinstall by downloading X11 from the software site apple.com? If from the third cd I assume I do a custom install and select just X11 [disks not handy, in attic].

Yeah, looks like you have *only* the SDK installed, without the user portion. You'll need to reinstall X11. It's on disc 3 of your panther CDs.
