Found a X11SDK receipt hanging around. Moved it to trash, then could reinstall X11user and X11SDK
Fink Commander loaded xless - my test app - without difficulty. The package list shows, of couse the xfree as mentioned.

You may not need to remove the files. Try installing X11User again, and if the virtual package for system-xfree86 doesn't show up, then remove the files and try again.

Can I just reinstall by downloading X11 from the software site apple.com? If from the third cd I assume I do a custom install and select just X11 [disks not handy, in attic].

Yeah, looks like you have *only* the SDK installed, without the user portion. You'll need to reinstall X11. It's on disc 3 of your panther CDs.
