I recently upgraded to Mac OS X 10.3.2 and I am trying to use a fresh install of Fink (0.6.2) together with the helper application FinkCommander (0.5.1). I should also add that I am a complete novice when it comes to Unix.

During this last week, using a dial-up link, I have made repeated attempts to get Fink Selfupdate and Update-all to work but to no avail. Regardless of whether the command is given via FinkCommander or in Apple's Terminal, Fink Selfupdate fails like this (FinkCommander example):

I will now run the rsync command to retrieve the latest package descriptions.

Updating stable/main
rsync -az --delete-after -q 'rsync://master.us.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/10.3/stable/main/finkinfo' '/sw/fink/10.3/stable/main/'
Updating stable/crypto
rsync -az --delete-after -q 'rsync://master.us.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/10.3/stable/crypto/finkinfo' '/sw/fink/10.3/stable/crypto/'
Updating unstable/crypto
rsync -az --delete-after -q 'rsync://master.us.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/10.3/unstable/crypto/finkinfo' '/sw/fink/10.3/unstable/crypto/'
Updating unstable/main
rsync -az --delete-after -q 'rsync://master.us.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/10.3/unstable/main/finkinfo' '/sw/fink/10.3/unstable/main/'
find . -name CVS | xargs rm -rf
rsync -az -q rsync://master.us.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo//VERSION /sw/fink/VERSION
touch stamp-rsync-live && rm -f stamp-cvs-live

The following package will be installed or updated:
fink
curl -f -L -O http://distfiles.opendarwin.org/fink-0.18.0.tar.gz

### execution of curl failed, exit code 7
Downloading the file "fink-0.18.0.tar.gz" failed.

If I copy the URL "http://distfiles.opendarwin.org/fink-0.18.0.tar.gz" to Download Wizard (1.5) it succeeds in downloading "fink-0.18.0.tar.gz" every time! However, this does not take me very far as FinkCommander refuses to accept and action the preference "Look for downloads in this directory: /Users/Shared/Downloads".

Moving on to Fink Update-all, I am repeatedly encountering this error message:

Failed: Illegal version specification '>= 1:495-1' for package cctools-extra

In FinkCommander the listing reads as follows:-

Status: outdated
Name: cctools-extra
Installed: 20030516-2
Latest: 1:495-1
Binary: null
Unstable: 1:495-1
Category : base
Summary: Extra software from cctools

Is there something wrong with Fink?

Is there a work around that I should use?

Thanks

John Hughes
