Now I'm really confused. Tried to delete xfree86 based on URL and previous recommendations. Even trashed stuff directly from OS X Finder. xfree86 packages still showing up.
P.S. Really appreciate all the help. Navigated installing gnucash with all its dependencies from source with less trouble.

Tried again to install bundle-gnome. Failed again, gnome-desktop indicating incorrect version of xfree86-shlibs. Ran update-all.

What does "indicating incorrect version of xfree86-shlibs" mean precisely? If you have Apple's X11 installed, nothing should ever mention the package xfree86-shlibs any more. Under no pretext.

When you ran update-all, it told you what packages it would update. It looks like it proposed to update some xfree86 packages such as xfree86-shlibs. You should not have said yes to this proposal.

I'll go through the whole thing again, but as I recall, gnome desktop failed to install indicating that I have a previous version of shlibs installed than required by desktop. When I checked version #'s the Apple Apple X11 SDK did install a different version that than indicated by the error message. Hence I tried to update-all. Listed alot of packaages, one of which was shlibs. Update-all then errored as described previously. I'll step through the whole thing again and report.

You really need to eradicate every trace of fink-installed xfree86 packages before this is going to work. You probably by now have a collection of half-installed packages. What gives

dpkg -l xfree86\*

If this shows anything, you need to get rid of it, perhaps with

sudo dpkg --purge --force-all PACKAGENAME

for all the packages that showed up.

Utlimately fails with:

Of course it fails. Trying to install fink xfree86 packages will (and need to) always fail when you have Apple's X11 installed.
