Is there anyway to convert a file from something abiword supports (e.g.
.doc, .rft) to .pdf? I installed pdflib, but can't figure out how to use
it.

For .rtf you could just use TextEdit and the OSX "Save as PDF" option under the Print menue
Otherwise, you could print to a postscript file, and use pstopdf from ghostscript.
