This looks like the window manager should be fine--I thought I got that "settings daemon" message when I tried GNOME with quartz-wm at one point, but that was back with GNOME 2.0 and X11 beta 3, and I just now tried it with no problems.

I'm not sure right now.

I'm not sure. I changed the .xinitrc file I use for KDE:
        source /sw/bin/init.sh
        export KDEWM=kwin
        /sw/bin/startkde

## >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1

to:
        source /sw/bin/init.sh
        exec gnome-session

And get:

I am trying to run Gnome on Panther but my display isn't right.

It gives me the splash screen and quits with:
There was an error starting GNOME Setting Daemon.
Some things such as . . . not work correctly.
The Setting Daemon restarted too many times.
        The last error message was:
        Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon'
GNOME will try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

I looked through the FAQ for screen setting 'fixes' but didn't find anything that works.
Is there an .xinitrc file I should try?

Are you using Apple X11 with the quartz-wm window manager (i.e. the default)?
