Yes, I am using the default quartz-wm.
I did a fink self-update & fink update-all.
Gnome now opens (with error messages) if I do a 'startx" in 'terminal' and, after 'X' opens, enter 'gnome-session'.
It isn't smooth or fast but does work -- but not near as good as KDE.
I received an earlier hint to change the "quartz-wm" in "xinitrc" in my home directory to "gnome-session", that didn't work before the last update, that I will try again when I have some extra time. Maybe that will make "gnome" more responsive (?).
Anyway, thanks for keeping the suggestions coming.

I am trying to run Gnome on Panther but my display isn't right.

It gives me the splash screen and quits with:
There was an error starting GNOME Setting Daemon.
Some things such as . . . not work correctly.
The Setting Daemon restarted too many times.
        The last error message was:
        Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon'
GNOME will try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

I looked through the FAQ for screen setting 'fixes' but didn't find anything that works.
Is there an .xinitrc file I should try?

Are you using Apple X11 with the quartz-wm window manager (i.e. the default)?
