Hi all,
Occasionally I need to install a package that is in the unstable set and thus only available in source form. I do this in Fink Commander by checking the "Use unstable packages" box in its preferences, then I select the package and click "Install", which proceeds to compile the program from source.
This works great except for one thing. If Fink needs to install some other package(s) in order to resolve a dependency for the item I've selected, it gets the source of the package and compiles it from scratch. It does this even if a stable binary package would resolve the dependency just as well.
Needless to say, waiting around for a bunch of dependencies to compile is quite painful, so I usually pre-empt the problem by finding out what the dependencies are and then installing the stable binary versions one by one myself. This is still a tedious process, of course, and it would be great if there were some way to automate it.
So, is there any way to tell Fink, "Always resolve dependencies with stable binary packages, even when installing unstable packages from source"? If not, what is the proper way to request this feature?
Thanks,
Trevor
