Maybe I am not installing by source correctly. Last time I removed xmms and tried to install it from fink by source, it said that I need to install 5 packages, one of which is xfree86. From what I have read I shouldn't need to install it since I am running 10.3.8 with x11.

Ah You have to install the X11SDK package from Xcode if you want to install anything from source that uses X11.
