Thank you for your tips Mr. Baba. I've perused the most juicy bits of
the two links that were provided, but still have some general
questions. I am unsure how to install and run programs. I've
downloaded SciGraphica and decompressed it, but am unsure how to
proceed from here.
Switching subjects, when I type:
startx
in Terminal, I get the following rigamarole:
XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
[DRI] screen 0 installation complete
Screen 0 added: 2304x1024 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/,
removing from list!
and then a Xquartz window pops up called 'xterm.'
I apologize in advance if these questions are too basic for even the
beginner forum, but I am truly lost and have spent the whole day to
no avail. I appreciate the help of the selfless experts on this
mailing list.

Hello All,
I'd like to use some open-source science and engineering programs
such as Oregano on my Mac (OS 10.4.2). I installed Fink-0.8.0,
FinkCommander Version 0.5.3, X11 1.1 - XFree86 4.4.0, and Xcode 2.1.
One problem is that although I have little UNIX experience in my
undergrad years (mostly using the vi editor to write e-mails in
Pine), I have no clue how to install and run programs using X11. I've
spent most of the day now trying make this work and if anyone could
give me some quick pointers it would be greatly appreciated. I've
typed
startx

Thank you
