I'm aware that this is not really a question for the fink list. apologies in
advance for
posting...:

I experience about 99% of the time (but not always) a problem, where after
waking up my G5
(10.4.8) from sleep,
the running X window manager (`ion3' in my case) does no longer work in so far
as
every attempt to create a new window results in the error message given as the
subject
of this mail and a message from the respective program (e.g. `gv') that it is
unable to
open the display.

in the 'troubleshooting Xfree86' page on the Fink site I found a work around,
namely
manually removing the (and recreating a new empty) .Xauthority file. this
indeed works.
(and thanks very much for that hint -- up to now I found no other cure than to
abort and
restart Xdarwin).

the reason for the problem given in the 'troubleshooting' page
is:
========================================cut======================================
this can be caused by some VNC installations, by running XDarwin through sudo,
and
probably some other freak accidents.
========================================cut======================================

I _do_ have tightvnc installed (but how could it do harm if not running?), I do
_not_ run
XDarwin through sudo. is my problem a regular 'freak accident'? does anyone
experience
similar problems after wake up from sleep mode? does anybody
have a clue what can go wrong "overnight"?
