"Freak accidents" may be excessive.  You're quite right about the
non-running tightvnc not being the culprit.

 I get this error occasionally when I switch X servers (e.g. from
X11.app to XDarwin.app.  I have never had it occur on waking up a
machine that is running X11 (of any sort), though.

I'd be interested to hear if others have had this problem.
