"point release" means you only get the versions that were available when 
the last binary distribution was released, so you won't be able to get 
any _new_ packages.

Source->Selfupdate-rsync should switch you to rsync downloading.  Please 
post (to the list) any errors you get, because it's supposed to work.

And you don't have to set the root password.  If your user account was 
set up with admin privileges (and it usually is), then you can just 
something like "sudo nano /sw/etc/fink.conf" and give it your password.
