This produced again the same error, and it tried to install the same
old version.
I figured that if I had first updated fink before upgrading to
Leopard, there would be much fewer problems. Luckily I could still do
this, because I have swapped my MBP hard disk with the one from a
(larger) external enclosure and did a clean Leopard install on the new
drive. This means I can still boot in my old Tiger installation from
the external disk. I ran the selfupdate there, and it worked
perfectly.
So I cloned the updated /sw directory again, and now I can finally run
"fink reinstall fink" successfully. The morale of this story is: if
you're going to upgrade to Leopard, make sure your fink installation
is up-to-date before you start.
Next on the list is trying to get rid of those xfree86 errors...
