0.8.1 is the "Fink distribution", 0.24.33 is the "fink" package manager 
version.  (Somebody got a little cute with Unix case insensitivity way back 
when).  This explains why you're not able to turn on the unstable tree 
via "fink configure".

Running "fink --version" should give you both the package manager and 
distribution versions simultaneously.

If your distribution is appropriate (0.8.1), you ought to be able just to 
run "fink selfupdate-rsync" to get to a new enough package manager that knows 
how to use "fink configure" to activate the unstable tree.  If you try to 
purge and reinstall Fink, you'll have to do this anyway to get mtr-nox.
