Often that's not what you want. I'm not quite sure if those got anything to do with it. Nope. Sometimes these things are subtle. We prefer packages to fail noisily when something's missing, but that doesn't always happen. I did notice the following when I compared with a successful build on my system: checking for php... php checking zend.h usability... no checking zend.h presence... no checking for zend.h... no (I had "yes" on the latter 3, and that's part of the php setup).
