Many thanks! I had to update X11 from 2.1.5 to 2.3.*. I didn't notice that my pre-installed X11 was that old (and that Fink had a problem with that; X11 on Tiger is even older, some 1.*). For now it seems to work after I had installed the current X11 version (just the *.la were not enough).
