I'm not an expert with r, so help me out here.

Does your professor know there is a MacOS X (native) binary available?

When you "downloaded R" where did you get it (that is which file do you 
mean that you downloaded)?

The package (r-base) includes the following:
> R.app no longer included in the R source distribution. To install, go to 
> http://cran.r-project.org/bin/macosx/, download and install R-GUI.dmg. You 
> will then need to edit Info.plist inside the app bundle to point to 
> /sw/Library/R.Framework (instead of /Library/R.Framework).

(But I don't find R-GUI.dmg at that location.)

xorg is not available on 10.5...

... instead, users are now encouraged to use xquartz:

In your "fink window" (do you mean you are using Fink Commander?) do you 
see r-base available?
