It's a bit tedious, and I'm going to have to step out.  Hopefully
someone else can guide you along.

I meant what was actually at the bottom of your log; or at least whether
you were doing a binary or source install.

I was a bit confused on what or why tetex-base

Fink doesn't care about MacTex.  It autodetects relatively few things
and that's not one of them.
