In any case, these symptoms correspond exactly to the bug reported for Xournal over at Arch Linux: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12923 In the above page, the Arch Linux folks have posted a patchfile and new PKGBUILD file that apparently fix the bug. However, building the file from source without using Fink fails for me, and I can't figure out how to incorporate the patch (which is invoked by autogen.sh) in the existing Fink package to try it.
