Ah, forgot that question.  No, I do not have a custom icon for the HD that Fink 
is being installed on.

However, that still shouldn't be installed in /._.

When I paste a custom icon onto a SnowLeopard HD, there is a file written at 
/.VolumeIcon.icns

What is the original problem?  No system file that I know of writes anything to 
/._. let alone any dot-underbar file.  Dot-underbar files (AppleDouble) are 
generally reserved for filesystems that do not understand resource forks or 
extended attributes, of which any HFS+ FS should (which is what mine, and most 
Mac OS boot volumes, is).
