 Here are some related lines in status.  db48-aes' occurs many times and I 
tried 
to excerpt just the ones where it seems to be getting installed rather than 
being listed as a dependency for other packages.

Right, because you have a broken status file, as per

and apt-get can't fix that (even though it says it can--it is what is
actually reporting the warning).

Post the entry in /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status at around line for db48-aes
(around line 5260 as the error says), and we'll be able to see what
edits need to be made.
