Using Apple's X11 is guaranteed to work. There were a few problems
among libraries and headers at one point, but those are fixed for OS
10.5.2 (I think) and later, and Xcode 3.1.3 and later.

We encouraged people to use Xquartz until all of those problems got
fixed. However, that introduced its own problems. XQuartz 2.3.3.2 is
the last version which allows in-place upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6, if
that's a concern.

However, using any later version of XQuartz on 10.5 is still OK--we rely
on reports from users for problems, and the fixes are such that they
make things more robust for whatever X11 gets used.
