You'd probably better reinstall Xquartz for safety. You may experience problems if you delete a library. So is it a Fontforge issue? Yes. Or the compiler picking up the X11 version because it's newer or something? Fontforge is explicitly checking for libpng16 (which doesn't even exist yet) and libpng15. However, it doesn't actually _build_ against libpng15--I tested that out on a 10.6 system (no libpng15 in X11) with a modification of the package.
