You'd probably better reinstall Xquartz for safety.  You may experience
problems if you delete a library.

Yes.

Or the compiler picking up the X11 version because it's newer or something?

Fontforge is explicitly checking for libpng16 (which doesn't even exist
yet) and libpng15.  However, it doesn't actually _build_ against
libpng15--I tested that out on a 10.6 system (no libpng15 in X11) with a
modification of the package.

I'd have thought the newer version would be downwardly compatible in any
case.

In theory, it's supposed to be.  However, fontforge appears to be going
beyond the public interface (which shouldn't change) into the private
stuff (which is definitely subject to change).

fontforge just got updated in unstable by the maintainer--it now doesn't
check for libpng15.
