That sounds suspiciously like the behavior one gets if a window manager isn't running. Installing Xquartz-2.7.6 didn't do the same thing here, so this might be a coincidence. Is your X11 startup customized in any way, or are you just using the default options? Are you using the Fink "xinitrc" package?
