That sounds suspiciously like the behavior one gets if a window manager 
isn't running.  Installing Xquartz-2.7.6 didn't do the same thing here, 
so this might be a coincidence.

Is your X11 startup customized in any way, or are you just using the 
default options?

Are you using the Fink "xinitrc" package? That needs some special care 
when Xquartz is updated.
