Regarding sourceforge: 1) Sourceforge has an extensive set of mirrors, which the fink bindist could be taking advantage of, I'm pretty sure, although probably to do this we need another configuration setting someplace.
2) It's probably also possible to allow others to mirror the bindist. At the time the change in bindist location was made last summer, we were not aware of anyone mirroring it (in spite of a public offer to do so having been in place for almost a year).
